GNU Cash is free for download. http://www.gnucash.org/
It's an Open Financial Exchange (OFX) client program like Quicken, allowing you to download transactions online.
Quicken Basic is sometimes free after rebate in a store, like Fry's Electronics. It's sometimes free when you buy a new computer. Look for specials in computer stores.
If I were you, I wouldn't wait. The money you spend on Quicken Premier would be nothing when compared with wasting $1000 per month. Although I'm a big fan of free open-source software, I bought Quicken Premier and am happy with it because it's a good investment itself. Their user community and their company culture are very helpful, very open, and very un-Microsoft. Check it out at http://www.quickenforums.com/index.jspa
