Problems With Quickbooks Update And Password?

When I try to open a quickbooks file, I get a large grey window that says that I need to update the file in order to get it to work. It asks me to type “yes” in a box to do so. If I click yes, it does not accept the password that is normally used. If I press “cancel” it does not allow me to open the file.
The most logical theory is that it somehow requires the administrator to make the update. However, there is no obvious (to me) way of connecting to Quickbooks as administrator.
Any advice gratefully received!
